Holiday Crafts on the cheap

I'm working on crafts for the holidays.  My mom is hosting a craft show on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and I'd like to make a little extra money for the holidays.

I'm making the following (and here are links to tutorials so you can make them at home too!):

Hot Pad/Towel hanger

Plastic Grocery bag holder

Flannel PJ pants with a matching pillow case

Aprons

Skirts

Reusable grocery sacks (Here is a great website that has TONS of different patterns!)

To keep this endeavor affordable, I started by going through my current stash of supplies.  I try to keep a variety of craft supplies on hand.  I buy them when they are on clearance or when I find a great deal.  A few places that you can find great, inexpensive craft supplies:

  • 99 cent/ Dollar stores

  • Walmart

  • Target (the dollar spot frequently has great crafting stuff like ribbon and paper)

Yesterday, I went through my fabric box and pulled out the fabric I wanted to use, washed it, and cut out a the aprons and grocery bags.  Today I'll be cutting out the PJ pants, and hopefully get started on the actual sewing.

So if I'm light on the posts in the next few days, it's because I'm sewing up a storm!

I went shopping: Great savings at Sears!

Check out your local Sears store!  Our local Sears is having a great end of summer sale, and clearance is 50-70% off of the original prices. Each clothing department  I stopped in had racks and racks of clearance stuff.

I scored two shirts at $2.99 each!  After taxes, it was $6.24 for two shirts that were originally $19.99 each. (sorry no pics, camera is still packed!)

If your local Sears has as many great deals as my Sears does, you may be able to get all of your holiday shopping done!

And don't forget to earn rewards by signing up for the Shop Your Way Rewards.

The joys of overage at Wal*Mart

I'm not a regular Wal*mart shopper, however, there was a great coupon this week available online that lead to some amazing overage*!

Coupons.com had a coupon for $6.00/2 Schick Disposable razors.  Walmart had packages of disposable razors for just $1.97 each, which leaves $2.06 in overage*!

Forgive me for the lack of photos, we're still unpacking and the cameras are MIA.

I used only 1 $6.00/2 per transaction.  I left the second coupon at home accidentally, so I *had* to go back.

Trip 1:

Razors   $1.97

Razors   $1.97

Snickers Bar  .74

Nature's Own Bread $2.98

English Muffins  $2.50 (Per Hubby's request!)

-$6.00/2 Razor Q (from Coupons.com)

- .74 Free Candy Q (From M&M/Mars Random Acts of Chocolate Facebook Campaign)

- 2.98 Free Loaf of Nature's Own Bread (BzzAgent Coupon)

Total .44

Tax .31 (Tax is on the pre-coupon amount in CA)

TOTAL OOP .75

Trip 2:

Razors   $1.97

Razors   $1.97

Garnier Hair color $6.47

Hazelnut Creamer $3.68 (we were out of creamer and we really needed it- so the overage was very helpful!!)

-$6.00/2 Razor Q (from Coupons.com)

- $7.99 (Free hair color coupon from Garnier Facebook campaign)

Total .1o

Tax .81 (Tax is on the pre-coupon amount in CA)

TOTAL OOP .91

*For those new to couponing, overage is when the amount of the coupon exceeds the price of the item and there is a negative balance.  Wal-Mart doesn't give cash back for overage, but you can use that negative balance to buy other items with little or no Out of Pocket.

Nature's Own Bread Review

(Disclosure- I am a BzzAgent and I received a coupon for a free loaf of Nature's Own bread, however all the opinions are mine).

Let me just say how excited I was when BzzAgent asked me to be a part of their Nature's Own Campaign.  Since the baby came six months ago, I am trying to get us to eat better. I want our son to be exposed to a healthy diet, and I still have some baby weight to lose!

Nature's Own Bread is free of artificial preservatives, colors, flavors and high fructose corn syrup.  My favorite part about all of the Nature's Own Breads is that they are high in fiber! There are tons of varieties, including breakfast breads and Sandwich thins (which make great breakfast sandwiches!)

Check out the Nature's Own Facebook page.  Enter to win a reusable grocery bag and a coupon for a free loaf of bread. Or, if you don't have Facebook, check out the Nature's Own website for more info!

Our New Home!

We moved into our new place on Saturday and we are starting to settle in.  While browsing my Twitter feed today, I found out that our move is just in time for the Share Your Space Challenge.  We could Def. use some new Furniture for the living room and maybe a dining room table!

We've also been getting rid of a lot of stuff we don't need as we unpack.  Moving boxes have been listed on Freecycle, Father Joe's Village is coming tomorrow to pick up the dresser and night stand that we do not need. I've also posted stuff for sale on craigslist- the baby swing, my brest friend and some baby clothes.

We're starting out right by getting organized and getting rid of the excessive stuff that we don't need.  Keeping our house clean and organized is my top priority!

Frugal Recipe: Strata

I am all for re-purposing leftovers.

On Saturday after we had moved into the new place, my Dad took the family out for dinner.  We had yummy Italian food, and at the table were loaves of unbuttered bread for us to tear into pieces and eat with our dinner.

When it was time to go, I had the waitress pack up the uneaten bread.  I couldn't let it go to waste.  I brought it home, tossed it into the freezer and put on my thinking cap.

After pouring over my cookbooks, I came up with a great use- Strata.  Strata is eggs and milk combined with spices/herbs poured over torn up pieces of bead, and allowed to sit in the fridge overnight, then it is baked.  It's one part custard, one part french toast.

Here is my recipe for Strata:

Garden fresh Strata

  • 1 pint size carton of Garden vegetable Egg Beaters

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/4 cup cottage cheese

  • 1 cup chopped veggies (I used red and green peppers and onions)

  • 2 cups cheddar cheese divided

  • 1/2 cup bacon, chopped into very small pieces (Optional- You can substitute chopped sausage)

  • 1 loaf of Italian Bread, or whatever kind of leftover bread or buns you have, torn into bite sized pieces

  1. spray a 8 inch glass pan with spray release.

  2. spread torn up bread pieces in the bottom of the pan.

  3. In a mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, cottage cheese, veggies, bacon and 1 cup cheese.

  4. Pour mixture over bread.

  5. Top with remaining cheese.

  6. Cover pan with tin foil and store in fridge overnight.

  7. The next morning, preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  8. Remove foil from pan and bake in heated oven for 25035 minutes, or until egg mixture has set.

Serve with fruit salad.  Makes 6-8 servings.  It holds up well for leftovers too.

Cook Ahead night to the rescue!

About twice a month, I do a cook ahead day.  It's pretty simple, you just make a few extra dinners, put them in freezer safe containers and then when you don't have time to cook or you are just so busy, you can pull out your frozen dinner and you're all set to go!  I usually fire up both crock pots on a lazy Sunday morning.

With our move this weekend, I want to use up as much of the food as we can.  I haven't been on a serious grocery shopping trip in over a month, we've been living off the stockpile.

This weeks' menu:

  • Tonight we are having turkey rotini Arribiatta.  Our brother in law made it when the family visited last month.  I froze the left overs, knowing they'd make a great meal!  I'll serve it with some mixed veggies.

  • Tomorrow is Chicken chili with onion bread and veggies.

  • Thursday is Chicken noodle soup, onion bread and salad.

  • Friday is garden veggie fritatta with onions, green peppers, onions and cheddar cheese.

Saturday is the big day, the movers arrive at 8am.  We'll be without internet for a few days, so I'll be offline until the 14th.  By the time I'm back online, I should have some great posts for you!

Guest Post: Getting the Most Out of Fresh and Easy

This is a guest post written by my friend Brooke, who is a fellow couponer and frugal living lady!

Getting the Most Out of Fresh and Easy

I ran into Fresh and Easy this evening to redeem two $5 off $25 coupons I was holding that were set to expire that day.  I hate to let those coupons go to waste.  I’ll start by saying Fresh and Easy (“F&E”) is not my favorite store, since I’m a heavy couponer and the only coupons they’ll accept are their own.  It’s tough walking by manufacturer items, knowing you have a coupon and not being able to use them….but, if I have a reasonable F&E coupon then I’ll still shop but there is a method.

Around grilling seasons (summer, Superbowl, Labor day, Fourth of July) F&E heavily advertises their “grill packs” – they are an assortment of fresh meats regularly priced at $9.99 but during the holiday weekends are discounted.  This trip (in honor of Labor day) they were $6.99.  The packs vary but my favorite contains 4 mild Italian sausages, 4 hamburger patties and 8-10 pieces of seasoned chicken (drumsticks and thighs).  The limit was 2 so I purchased the limit ($6.99 X 2) as well as some discounted slider burger buns (2 packs both marked down to 0.52), some margarine, tomatoes (4 pack $1.99), strawberries and apple pie and a few other pantry staples I needed like sugar.  My total was a little over $25.00 then I redeemed my coupon and paid a few cents over $20.00.

I brought home the meat packs and immediately began to break them up for freezing.  I put the sausages in Tupperware containers suitable for freezing.  I bagged up the hamburger patties (2 to a baggie) and froze 4 patties (left 4 raw patties in the fridge).  I put 1 package of the chicken into a freezer safe container and put the other chicken pieces in the fridge.  For lunch the following day I pan fried the burger patties into mini-slider burgers (also using the discounted buns) and we had those for lunch.  I plan to grill the chicken for dinner.  This is an excellent way to affordably stockpile meat to use for several different purposes and storing meat correctly will ensure good meals down the road or towards the end of the month when the budget is tighter.  Below are a few ideas on how to use the meat from the packs.

Hamburger patties – fry for taco meat, add to pasta sauce to thicken it up, ground beef for hamburger helper or velveeta skillet boxed meals

Italian Sausages – boil and grill like brats or hot dogs, remove from casing and fry to incorporate into pasta sauce with leftover veggies, cook and slice to use as a pizza topping

Chicken – grill or bake chicken, debone and use as fajita meat, slow cook in crock pot and shread meat to use for a Mexican style tortilla casserole

Even Mr. CaCoupondiva is thrifty!

Here is a great link about getting rid of cable that my husband posted on his Facebook: A Quick Guide to Cutting the Cord.

We've never had cable. We've lived together for 5 years, and we've lived with broadcast TV (over the air with an antenna and converter box), Netflix (a gift from hubby's parents!), and now we have a Hulu subscription.

In my area, cable tv (with Cox Cable) is $61.99/mo.  It's usually on special for less, or you may get a discount if you bundle it with your home phone (we don't have one!), but after any introductory rates have expired, the monthly price is $61.99/mo.

So, in the 5 years we've lived together, we've saved roughly $3700 by not having cable. That's A LOT of money.

I'm not addicted to TV.  We watch Netflix or a show or two on Hulu at night, and I watch a movie during the day while I do housework. We read, talk, or play with the baby while most people are glued to the tube each night for 4-5 hours. We go for a family walk each night.  We spend an hour together, walking the neighborhood, talking and catching up.

If you don't have cable, or a tv (which is becoming more prevalent), what do you and your family do for entertainment?
