Getting free stuff of value....

I post freebies a few times per week.  At every class I teach, someone asks me how I get free money.  Because I do.  I recieve checks and gift cards in the mail each month.

Here are a few of the programs I use:

  • Small Business Knowledge Center.  I mail them junk mail, they mail me gift cards!  Ok, so it's a little more involved than that.  Check out this link for more info.

  • MyPoints: I click links in emails, take short surveys, and do my online shopping through their website and earn points that I redeem for gift cards.  Most of my points come through the surveys. I earn 1 $10 gift card per month (approximately).

  • Global Opinion Panels.  I take surveys (a few a week), do product testing and follow up surveys and earn points.  Points are redeemable for cash or gift cards. I earn about $5.00/month.

  • When you sign up and refer 10 friends to Shopittome, you’ll receive a gift card to one of ten stores (you pick).  Starbucks, Jamba Juice and Whole Foods just to name a few! You and your friend will receive no spam, and you don’t have to buy anything! (I've received 5 so far!)

  • Endorse.com- Currently, Endorse is undergoing a re-vamp, however, once they are up and running again, I'll post a link.  Last year, I earned over $200 from Endorse, just in one quarter, just by doing my usual shopping!

  • Rebates!  I rebate as often as possible. I search on the web to find rebates that fit my family's needs.  My favorite rebate website is Coupons, Deals and More.

  • I have a Swagbucks account, but I don't use it very often. You can earn points by searching (on their site or install their search toolbar), printing and redeeming grocery coupons, and lots of other activities.  I have only earned a few $5.00 amazon gift codes through Swagbucks.

How do you earn free money and gift cards?

Meal Plan Monday!

I got an email last week asking me if I could break down what is in the stuff I cook.  The reader accused us of not eating "enough" fruits and veg.

I also received an email from someone asking why we don't eat a lot of pasta, bread, or rice.  Answer: We get most of our carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables.  We eat quinoa, which is a grain.  It's high in protein, and is a great substitute for rice in soups and stews.

Using it all up: making vegetable stock!

Part of this years' resolution was to use up the food we had, not to waste food.   As I peered into the fridge last night, I realised that we had a bag of baby carrots and a bunch of celery that was getting squiffy.

I checked over the onions on the counter and 3 of them were getting  funky.  I chopped up the onions and the celery, tossed them along with the carrots in canola oil, sprinkled them with kosher salt, pepper, and garlic and baked them at 250 for 2 hours.
After removing it from the oven, I covered the cooked veggies with 6 cups of hot water, covered it and let it sit over night.  I wanted to loosen all of the cooked on goodness.  This morning, I poured all of it into a stock pot, added 8 more cups of water, covered it and cooked it on low.   I added some Parisien Bonnes Herbe (about 2 tablespoons).

After I post this recipe, I'm going to go strain off the solids and pour the stock into a glass jar. Once it's room temp, I'll place it in the freezer and save it for the next time  I make soup!

Roasted Veggie Stock (makes about 6 cups)

  • 1 lb baby carrots

  • 1 lb celery, cleaned and roughly chopped

  • 3 medium yellow onions, roughly chopped

  • 2 tablespoons oil of your choice

  • kosher salt, pepper and garlic to taste

  • 2 tablespoons of your favorite seasoning (such as Parisien Bonnes Herbe  or Italian seasoning)

  • 14 cups of water

Directions:

  1. toss veggies in oil, and season with salt, pepper and garlic.  Bake in a 13x9 in pan at 250 degrees for 2 hours or until veggies are tender.

  2. Remove pan from the oven and cover the cooked veggies with 6 cups of hot water, covered it with aluminum foil and let it sit until room temp.

  3. Once the veggies and water are at room temp, pour all of it into a stock pot, add the last 8  cups of water, cover it and cook it on low for 3-4 hours. Add seasoning during cooking.

  4. Strain off the solids and discard. Pour stock into a freezer proof container and store in the freezer until you are ready to use it!

I'll probably end up making vegetable noodle soup!

I went shopping: Target

Can it really be called shopping if my OOP was $0.00?

Thanks to some blog I read (and I can't remember which one), I was able to score free Activia yogurt.

This week it's 2/$4.  There is a $2/2 target coupon available on Target.com, and in the 2/15/12 SS there is a $1/1 Q.

We bought 2 Activia Light in strawberry.  I even brought my handy reusable bag, but because my OOP was zero, I didn't receive the 5 cent bag credit. Oh well.  Free is rad too.

If you didn't get the 2/15/11 SS insert for whatever reason, Coupons.com has a $1/1 Activia 4-pack (use Zip code 84121)

REMEMBER: At Target you can stack a Target store coupon and a manufacturer coupon!

Freebie Friday!

Friday means FREEBIES!

Here are some of the freebies circling the 'net:

If you've found other freebies, please leave a link in the comments!

Have a great weekend!

I've been cooking!

Sorry for the absence over the past few days.  We had family in town this week, and we were spending time exploring San Diego!

While the family was here, I did a fair amount of cooking.  Here are a few of the recipes I made:

Greek Quinoa Salad

  • 1 cup chicken broth (I used low sodium)

  • 1 cup quinoa

  • 1/2 cup chopped bell peppers

  • ¼ cup chopped onion

  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes

  • 2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled

  • a sprinkle of granulated garlic

  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar

  • 1/4 cup oil (I used Canola oil b/c I don't like the taste of olive oil)

  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard

  1. Cook quinoa in broth as per quinoa package directions. Cool in fridge. (You can also place the quinoa pot in a larger bowl with cold water and ice to speed up cooling)

  2. Combine oil, vinegar, and mustard in a measuring cup.  This is your dressing.

  3. Combine all vegetables in a bowl with a lid.  Stir in cooled quinoa and cheese.

  4. Add about 1/2 the dressing.  Place the remaining dressing in a fridge safe container, and refrigerate the salad and dressing overnight.  before serving, add the remaining dressing and stir well to combine.

Serves 6-8 as a side dish

Moosie's Pot Roast

  • 1 2-3 lb. pot roast, your favorite cut (I like Chuck Roast)

  • 1 can reduced sodium cream of mushroom soup

  • 1 envelope powdered onion soup mix (I like Liptons)

  1. Brown the pot roast, place it in the crock pot.

  2. In a small bowl, mix the soups, and pour over the roast.

  3. Place cover on crock pot and cock on low for 6-8 hours.

  4. Before serving, shred the roast with a fork.

  5. If you would like creamier gravy, add 4-6 tablespoons of low fat sour cream 20-30 minutes before serving.

Serves about 6-8. I had a few sliced onions in the fridge, so I placed the onions in the bottom of the crock pot, then the roast, and then poured the gravy sauce overall of it.

South Western breakfast caserole

  • 1 whole egg

  • 5 egg whites

  • 1 cup cottage cheese

  • 1/4 cup melted butter

  • 1/4 cup flour (of your choice)

  • 2 cups cheese, shredded (your choice) I used cheddar

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 small can diced green chiles

  • 1 cup chopped bacon ( You can use less)

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

  2. Beat eggs and add remaining ingredients.

  3. Bake in greased 9 inch squarepan.

  4. Bake for 35 minutes or until eggs are firm and inserted knife comes out clean.

  5. Serve with salsa and sour cream.

Serves 4-6

You can use whole eggs or egg beaters instead.

I went shopping: Walmart!

I did this last week, but my camera died after taking the picture below.  Sooo... I was a little lazy in re-charging the camera battery.

I got all of  this for only .38!

My Scenario:

  • Buy (4) Vaseline Total Moisture 3oz.

  • Buy (2) Beechnut Baby Food

  • Use (4) $1/1 3 oz or larger Vaseline Total Moisture, Aloe Fresh or Cocoa Radiant coupon, 1/29 RP

  • Use (1) receive 2 Free Beechnut baby food (coupon from Beechnut)

  • Total after coupons: -.12

  • Total after taxes: .38

The lotion is going into the present cabinet.  I'll be adding it to gift baskets throughout the year.  I have more of the $1/1 3 oz or larger Vaseline Total Moisture, Aloe Fresh or Cocoa Radiant coupon, 1/29 RP, however, all of my local Wal*Mart's are out. So are all of my local Targets!!

It went shopping (twice!!) at Rite-Aid

Since having Small Man appear on the scene, certain times during the month, I experience awful back pain (almost like back labor, good gods, it HURTS!!), so when I saw that Rite-Aid was having a sale this week on ThermaCare I got really excited.

Here is what I did:

  • Buy (4) Thermacare Wraps $24.00

  • use (3) $3/1 ThermaCare Product printable (I couldn't print a 4th!)

  • use $1/1 Advil, Advil PM, Children’s Advil or Thermacare, exp. 3/31/12 (RP 01/29/12 #2)

  • Total after coupons $ 14.00

  • Get (2) $4.00 Plus Up Rewards for Thermacare

  • Get $10.00 for Monthly UPR ( $10 wyb $25 worth of Thermacare,Advil,Colgate)

  • Submit for $10.00 Rebate (Pfizer rebate found in RP 01/29/12 #2)

  • Total after rebate $4.00 PROFIT!

I filled out my rebate paperwork yesterday and popped it into the mail today!  I put it all away before I could snap a photo.

I looked in the cabinet this morning and GASP- We were out of Advil. I had one $1/1 Advil, Advil PM, Children’s Advil or Thermacare, exp. 3/31/12 (RP 01/29/12 #2) left, so I headed over to Rite-Aid and picked up a bottle.  It was $5.99, and there was a $1.00 Plus Up Reward.
Here was my scenario:

  • Buy (1) 40 count Advil Gel Caps $5.99

  • Use $1/1 Advil, Advil PM, Children’s Advil or Thermacare, exp. 3/31/12 (RP 01/29/12 #2)

  • Use $4.00 Plus Up Reward (from yesterday)

  • Total after coupons $.99 ($1.08 after taxes)

  • Receive 2 Plus Up Rewards: $1.00 for Advil, and $10.00 for buying $25.00 in ThermaCare and Advil

  • Total after Plus Up Rewards: $10.01 PROFIT!!

And we'll be free of headaches for a while now!

Now that I had $15.00 in Plus Up Rewards left ($4.00 from yesterday and $11.00 from today), it was time to spend these bad boys!  I don't like leaving the store with rewards.  I can forget about them, and once they expire, it's like throwing money away!

My Scenario:

  • Buy (3) SoftSoap Body Washes $4.99/each

  • Buy (2) Say Yes To... Lip Balms $2.99/each

  • Buy (1) Paper Towel (not pictured, already in use!) $1.00

  • Use (3) $1/1 SoftSoap Coupon (from a recent newspaper insert)

  • use (2) $2/1 Say Yes To... Coupons (printable coupon- no longer available)

  • Use $15.00 in Plus Up Rewards

  • Total after Coupons -.05!

After taxes, I paid $1.65 OOP.

Now my stockpile is a little beefed up and I'll be getting $10.00 in the mail for my troubles!!

General Mills Try Me Free Offer from regional 2/5/12 General Mills Insert

**This was a regional insert. It was NOT in the San Diego Union Tribune, it was in the LA Times.**  From looking around the internet, it looks like areas of Texas (DFW) also received this insert too!

I am sooo excited about this TMF!! 90% of this food we do not eat, but I will be giving it to a neighbor, who has kids and they'll love it!  You can get a full refund for these products when you purchase them at Vons (or other Safeway brand store) between 2/5 –  3/31:

  • Multi Grain Cheerios Peanut Butter (up to $4.79)

  • Dulce de Leche Cheerios (up to $4.79)

  • Nature Valley Protein Bars (up to $4.67)

  • Ocean Spray Fruit Flavored Snacks (up to $2.87)

  • Betty Crocker Fun Da Middles (up to $3.35)

  • Progreeo Rich & Hearty Soups (up to $2.79)

  • Pillsbury Grands! Biscuits Sandwiches or Egg Scrambles (up to $3.51)

  • Totinos Pizza Stuffers (up to $4.35)

  • Yoplait Greek (4pk) (up to $3.50)

  • Yoplait Greek with Granola (up to $3.50)

This will not be a moneymaker.  The value of the coupons will be deducted from the cost of the items. But... That's ok with me!  To lower your original OOP, you may consider using the coupons that came in the 2/5/12 GM insert.  There are not coupons for every item, but I'd say probably 50% of the items have a corresponding item.

Per the Safeway Facebook Page, "The General Mills “Try Me Free” Rebate will be available in tomorrow’s paper. You will be able to receive the rebate for up to 10 items, but you are not required to purchase all 10. We hope this helps! -Alex, Customer Support"

You have to have the original form, no copies allowed.  Here is what it looks like:

If this food is not something that you or your family enjoy, consider purchasing it and submitting the TMF form, and giving the food to a friend, neighbor, or family member who may have fallen on hard time.

We'll be shopping for this rebate at the end of this week.

Money saving for Mommies!

Baby/Child Freebies

Kids are expensive, that’s a fact of life! With coupons, shopping sales, and the myriad of programs that manufacturers run to entice and keep consumers coming back, you will never pay full price for anything baby or kid related again!

Diapers: Huggies and Pampers both have a long running loyalty programs. Each package of diapers and wipes contains a code that can be entered on the manufacturer’s website. Codes are worth points, and those points can be redeemed for gift cards, toys, even free diapers and wipes! Depending on the size of the package, the amount of points varies. Larger packages yield more points. Visit Huggies and Pampers websites to learn more each program and the amount of points that can be earned from each package. Make sure to sign up for their newsletters too. Codes are sometimes in the newsletters too.

From Left to Right: Sample Pampers and Huggies Codes found in diaper and wipe packages.

Some stores (Target, Babies R' Us, and Walgreens to name just two) allow you to stack a manufacturer coupon and store coupon.  Frequently Target has printable store coupons on their website.

Coupons available from coupons.com

Formula: For those that will be formula feeding their baby, three of the major formula manufacturers (Enfamil, Similac, and Gerber Good Start) offer high value coupons and/or formula checks and usually samples. Formula checks can be defined as a combination of coupon and an item specific gift certificate. They look like checks and are usually for a high value. Retailers accept them and deposit them like the checks you write from your own checkbook. The formula manufacturers honor the check and the retailer receives the face value of the formula check. Many stores allow you to pair a formula check with a coupon for even more savings.  Target allows you to use a formula check, a manufacturer coupon and a target coupon!

Formula Checks.  To receive these, visit the infant formula websites and sign up:

Similac

Gerber

Once your baby is old enough to eat baby food, Gerber will send you coupons for cents and dollars off jars of baby food and snacks (like puffs and yogurt melts). Sign up with Beechnut and they will send you some great coupons for rice cereal, baby food and snacks.

Clothing, Toys, and misc. baby stuff: Babies need a lot of STUFF.  If you have friends or relatives with babies, you may receive a lot of hand me downs, and that is great.  It will save you a lot of money and time.  Another cost saving measure is to visit consignment shops tailored to babies and kids. Most consignment shops buy and trade clothes, toys, and furniture. Craigslist is also a great choice!

Before buying or accepting a carseat, crib, stroller, or baby carrier, check to make sure that it has not been a part of a recall. In the case of carseats and bases, check to make sure the carseat is not expired. Carseats are safe for 5 years.  After that time, the components can break down, the plastic can weaken,  the straps can stretch and no longer hold in the child safely.

When your child grows into the next size, you can take the outgrown clothes to a consignment shop and exchange the outgrown clothes for new (to you!) baby clothes.  We have done that with Little Mans' clothes since he was little tiny, and it's a great way to save money!

Little Man sleeping in the Pack N' Play at Granny's house on Thanksgiving.  The shirt and sweater vest came from a local consignment store!

Cook ahead day- Oatmeal in the crockpot

We eat Steel Cut oats, also known as Irish Oats.  They aren't as processed as quick oats or instant oatmeal, so it takes longer for your body to digest them, keeping you fuller, longer.

I cook a batch of Steel Cut oats each week, package them up and freeze them.  Mr. Coupondiva has it every morning for breakfast at the office. It's super easy!!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup steel cut oats (DO NOT USE old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats)

  • 4 ½ cups water

  • 1 tsp. of each: vanilla extract, honey and cinnamon (all optional)

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in a slow cooker/CrockPot.  I also use a crockpot liner to minimize the mess.

  2. Cover and cook on LOW 6-8 hours.

  3. Add toppings of your choice and serve!

We like dried fruit, cut up apples, brown sugar, and/or cinnamon on our oatmeal.

This is a great breakfast.  It's Vegan and most Steel Cut Oats are Gluten Free (make sure to check the label!).

Babies and Toys R Us Rewards R us program changing 2/29/12!

If you are a Rewards R Us member, you probably received an email last week letting you know that effective 2/29/12, the Diaper, Formula, and Greeting Card Rewards programs are ending. You can find more info here.

What does that mean?  For my family, it means that we won't be shopping at Babies R Us as often, as there is now no great reward for doing so.

Little Man will be weaned off Formula in the next month or so, and we've been using the Wal*Mart generic brand, Parents Choice, for the past few months.  Since all formula is FDA regulated, there is no nutritional difference in name brand vs. generic formulas. The differencein price is about $10.00 per container.

Target has been having some great store coupons for diapers as of late, which I've been pairing up with manufacturer coupons to save $7-9 per box. We've got a few boxes stockpiled, so we should be ok for a while.

One of the cardinal rules of being a hardcore couponer is: no brand or store loyalties.  Keep your eyes and ears open for sales and coupons and the end of this program won't be the end of the world!

If you are a Starbucks Rewards member...

Check your email!

When you click on the link in your email it will take you to the Bricks coupon printer.  You can print this coupon twice.

Mine are already clipped and in my coupon wallet!! Yummy.

Fine print on the coupon: Good for one Starbucks Petites for $1 (plus tax if appliciable) with purchase of any handcrafted beverage.

Where to find coupons!

Where to find coupons?

  • The Sunday paper

  • In Stores

  • Junk Mail

  • All You Magazine

  • Store Circulars

  • The Internet

The best online/printable coupon-hunting tip I can give is: Google whatever item you are looking for plus printable coupon. Be as specific as possible. “Ovaltine printable coupon” will yield better results than “Chocolate milk mix printable coupon”. Please remember that when you print coupons from the Internet, not all stores accept them, as there is high incidence of counterfeiting and forgery. Using fake coupons hurts all couponers.

Most Websites offer great printables, but ask you to sign up. They’ll email when new coupons are ready to print or, in some cases will mail you samples of new products.

Vocal Point (they also offer free samples from time to time)

Eat Better America (coupons for healthy products)

Coffee-Mate coupons

Pillsbury coupons

Health food coupons

When you print coupons online- be an ethical coupon user. Don’t photocopy coupons, don’t alter coupons digitally or otherwise. Abusing and misusing coupons in all forms hurts all coupon users and leads to stricter coupon regulations and stores places limitations on the amount and types of coupons they will accept.
