Lunch Time!

One of the ways that T and I save money is to bringour lunch with us to work.  Now PB&J and fluffernutters can get boring, so in lieu of soggy sammiches, I try and make at least 2 extra servings of dinner a few nights each week.

Tonight I made a tasty Italian cassarole, it made 6 servings.  T had seconds, so that leaves 4 extra servings.  2 for his dinner tomorrow (I won't be home until late), and  2 the freezer for other lunches sometime in the future).  For the record, I don't eat sausage- it doesn't agree with me.  I was still full from lunch, and later I had a bowl of cereal.

1 package Italian Sausage (I used Jennie O Turkey Sausage)  $2.00
1 can Hunts Italian Sauce (It's spaghetti sauce)  $.85
1 large Can Tomatoes with Basil  $.99
1/2 box whole wheat pasta .50
4 small onions, chopped .40
1 cup cheese $1.00
1 large zuchinni, cut into "coins"  Free from my mom's garden
Spray release

Saute onion in spray release (that's Pam), over medium heat.  Add sausages and cook until browned.  Add sauce and tomatoes, and the zuchinni.  Cook on medium until boiling.  Add raw pasta, place lid on pot, reduce to low and cook for 15 minutes or until zuchinni and pasta are both cooked.  Remove lid, add cheese and serve.

It was .95/serving.

For me- food doesn't have to be expensive, it just needs to be good. Good means healthy, filling, and something we'll eat.

The menu this week consists of:

Squash Bisque- I made it 2 weeks ago and froze it.  I cut up and baked a large squash.  Once it was cooked, I cut the rind off, discarded it and cooked the meat of the squash with chicken broth and spices (pumpkin pie spice). I pureed it in batches in the blender.

Tacos- I only use 1/2 lb of ground beef.  I add a can of drained, rinsed kidney beans to the spiced meat mixture to give it a different mouth feel and add extra fiber. We add a lot of extra veggies, and sometimes skip the tortilla and use a lettuce "cup" instead.

Black Bean Soup-  I got Black Bean Flakes a few weeks ago and I can't wait to turn them into a thick rich soup with carmelized onions, salsa, chicken stock and a sprinkle of cheese on the top!

Chicken with stuffing/dressing- I've got homemade cranberry jelly to serve with it too!

Chili-  I've got a freezer full of frozen veggies and a cupboard fulla beans- it's time for chili!!

Again.. In Praise of the .99 store

After doing the All you grocery challenge, our cupboard was empty.  Immediately after it ended, I shopped for about a months worth of groceries, however, we ate it all!

Last night, facing an empty cupboard, I made THE LIST of everything that usually lives in our cupboard...

For those of you who do not read this on LJ, and don't care what's on the list, scroll on down.

2 large cans crushed tomatoes
2 cans crushed tomatoes with onions and garlic
2 can tomato sauce
2 cans tomato paste
2-4 cans of Rotel tomatoes (When they are on sale, I buy them a case at a time because when they aren't they are $3/can)
2-4 cans vegetarian, fat free refried beans
2-4 cans sugar free Hunts spaghetti sauce (when it's on sale, I will buy a case)
2 cans kidney beans
2 cans navy beans
2 cans black beans
2-4 packages of chicken broth (usually the shelf stable large cartons)
2-4 boxes of muffin or quickbread mix
2-4 boxes of cake mix
various canned soups and chilis
Tuna in pouches
Cereal
instant oatmeal
Tortillas
dried peas
BBQ sauce
Salad dressing
Misc. Condiments (Mustard, ketchup, mayo)
Spice packets (taco seasoning is the biggie around here)
Of that list, I had less than 5 items on that list.  I  took the list, packed up my re-usable grocery bags (including the padded zip top ones for frozen stuff) and hit the 99 cents only in Fletcher hills!

I bought a cart full of food, 54 items for $50.29.  I had to pick up a few other things at the grocery store (like milk!), so while I was there, I had my 99 cents only receipt with me, so, I did some comparison shopping.  By shopping at 99 cents only, I saved over $200.  Here are just a few things I saved BIG on:

Vons price                                                   How many I bought at the 99 cents for for .99/each
Bagged salad $2.49/bag                                                                   3
Nancy's Frozen Quiche $4.99/box of 12                                           1
Nancy's Black Tie Party Appetizer tray (48 pieces) $13.99              1
Farmer John Sausage $1.50/package                                              3
Frozen berries $3/bag                                                                       3
Orvel Redinbocker popcorn $3.50/box                                              2
Hunts canned tomatoes- large cans $2.50/each                               2
Plums  $2.99/lb - my bag was 1.5 lbs                                                1
Nectarines $2.99/lb  my bag was 1.5lbs                                            1
Starkist Tuna in a pouch $3/ each                                                      2
Campbell cream of chicken soup $1.99/each                                    2
Pepperidge farms stuffing $3.49/each                                               1
Progresso Brand Chicken broth $3.99/each                                      3

Those were the biggies.  Most everything else I saved $1-2/item on, so things, like the Hunts tomato paste (the ones in the tiny cans), were the same price as the grocery store.

So, yes, you can get name brand food at the 99 cent store!

Lesson on frugality- Just because it's free, doesn't mean you need it.

I just googled the phrase "Free Stuff".

 Results 1 - 10 of about 94,800,000 for free stuff. (0.13 seconds)

WOW.

There are articles and websites devoted to getting free stuff.  Here is an article from the front page of yahoo today.  Think about it.  If you spent an hour online responding to ffers of free whatevers, in 6-12 weeks, you house might be full of crap. Or, full of cool stuff.  It depends if you will fill out any offer or be selective.

Here is my rule of thumb to free stuff:  If I don't already use it, then don't get it.  This applies to free items after sale and coupon as well.  I know there  are a lot of people who "shop" weekly for their freebies and then give them to charity, or who only live on the freebies. I want to spend what little free time I have doing things I enjoy with my family.

Here are some examples of free food/HBA I have passed up as of late:

Kraft mac n' cheese (in the blue box).  We don't eat it.  It has too much sodium (which we need to watch), too many carbs and it's not something I want my family to eat. I leave the coupons on the shelf for someone who needs them.

Irish spring- It smells weird and we don't use bar soap.

Diabetes monitors- We aren't diabetic!!! I know they are free with coupons and rebates all the time, but that the hell good is something (even if it's free) if we can't use it?  BTW- they don't come with the test strips.  Those are separate and they are expensive!

Soy Joy Bars- Jennie doesn't eat them anymore and they taste like saw dust to me.

There are some sites that I visit, such as Abundant Food Savings that has a section on freebies and I check those out- if it's something that I am interestedin trying or already use, I'll request a sample- Samples usually come with coupons.

I have in my possession at this very moment, probably 20 bottles of Garnier Fructis shampoo.  Why?  Because it was free!  And I really like it!  I liked it before, and once it was free.

Savings Part 2~

I decided to break it up into 2 entries!

Shop at the .99 store: I'm serious.  Some times even with coupons, there are places you can find items cheaper.  HBA items like zip lock bags, Tissues, Q-tips can be found at the .99 store!  99 cents only has a great selection of fruit and veg too!

Less Clutter: Forgo expensive cleansers, 99% of your cleaning can be done with white vinegar and salt.

FREE:  Check your local Craigslist or local newspapers for free community activities.  In San Diego, the Night and Day section of the UT has lots of info on free events.

It's all in the box!  When stores that you shop at have their big annual clearance sale (so for me it Bath and Body Works and Yves Rocher), stock up on gifts.  I keep a list of birthdays and people I buy holiday gifts for, and when I see a good sale, I stock up on gifts all year long!  I buy a few extras- you'll never know when you'll need a hostess gift, or when a new holiday (assistant's day, bosses day) pops up!  I have a tote in my spare room closet that is stocked with gifts.

We also stock up on wine when Beverages and More has it's Buy one, get one for a nickel sale.  Wine makes a great host(ess) gift.

I like to stock up on items that are free after coupons- they make great filler items in gift baskets,  Secret Santa gifts, or a small gift when a friend needs cheering up.

That's it for now!  Happy shopping and Saving!

straight form my savings book

This is stuff straight from my savings/price book.

These are transcribed from my hand written notes, ways for anyone to save money, from the complete n00b to the seasoned couponing/frugal living professional.

PRICE BOOKS: So I've discussed Price books before- it can be as little or as much as you want it to be.  My price book is in a hardcovered spiral bound  pad.  It's got a list of what I buy, then there are columns that have a store name at the top.  I write in how much my items cost at the following stores: CVS, Walgreens, Albertson's, Vons, Ralph's.

I add new items as needed.  My price book is in pencil, in case i need to remove anything.  Some people use Excel spreadsheets, or an Access database they built themselves.

Oldies, but goodies:
Shop from a list
Shop alone (without your kids, husband)- you will spend less.
Be willing to try new brands, including the store brand. Sign up for club cards.
Just because there is a coupon- doesn't mean you A) Have to buy it, and B) it's cheaper.

STACK IT UP! Some stores let you "stack" coupons.  Here you go: There is a store coupon, say Target, and there is a manufacturer coupon.  Target lets you use both together.  So does Walgreens, and CVS. Remember YMMV.'' Ask at your store if you can use them both.

SAVE ON SERVICES: Buy in bulk.  Buy 4 massages, get one free. You can also get oil changes, beauty services (including haircuts), home cleaning services, just ask!!

MEDIA: Save cash by not subscribing to magazines- visit your fav mags. websites to read the articles.  Most magazines publish the majority of their articles online.
The library has LOTS of great DVD's!  We have been checking out DVD's from the library recently, saving over $100 in rental fees!

Turn to the 'Net:  Check out Get1free.com type in your zip code and see what is in your neighborhood.  For our area, there are movie, Frozen yogurt, food, and day spa deals!
If you have an Entertainment book, register your card (that comes with the book) for more coupons, deals, and savings on entertainment.com.

Your Opinion matters!!  Survey websites like Synovate and MyPoints email you surveys and offers.  Complete them  to earn points which you can redeem for cash or gift cards.

It Pays to be a Pro!  If you have a professional designation (CPA, CCAM, CHLU), check with your licensing agency website to see if they offer any discounts or deals.

Likewise, if you have USAA, AARP, or AAA, take advantage of all of the services and discounts they offer.  Visit their website or give them a ring- You'd be surprised at all the cool stuff you can get with your AAA membership!

Listening for the secret messages!  Many radio and TV stations offer discounted Gift Certificates ($50 GC for $25) on their websites.  Most Clear Channel station websites offer this.  For San Diegians, check out: http://kmyi.star941deals.com/ or KYXY's 1/2 off Gift Certificates: HTTP://www.sandiegohalfoff.com

SAVINGS IN THE BAG! Henry's and Trader Joe's offer a discount (5 or 10 cents) for every cloth bag you bring in to pack your groceries in.

LOWER YOUR ENERGY BILL:  Unplug appliances whennot in use.  Even if they are turned off, they can still draw power.

Install a low flow showerhead and a low flow toilet, and purchase energy star rated appliances when available.  Many times there are rebates in addition to the money you will save!

Use CFL bulbs, and see if your electrical provider does trade in days when you can take in your old energy wasting bulbs and halogen lamps and get new energy effiecent bulbs and lamps.

Another great frugal living blog...

The Greenest Dollar- It's pretty awesome!

new tips

I will be updating tonight with a slew of new frugal living tips and some old favorites too.  I have about 20 pages of notes!

tags and some sad news!

I've been adding tags to the entries, so if you read this on LJ, you will be able to search this blog with the tags.

Sad news:  We didn't win the All you Grocery Challenge.  I just checked their blog and apparently they had chosen a winner over a month ago. It was nice of them not to email the rest of us and tell us we didn't win.  I'm sure someone who lives in a house with a large garden won. Not having to buy fruit  and veg must be nice.

Sorry to seem bitter, but that prize would have really helped us.

Victory!

The Target in Santee had an end cap of the glade soy candles! I got my six!

I'm stocking up the present box- I keep a box/tote full of gifty items in our house, so whenever we need a present for someone (forgotten birthday, or last minute invite) we always have something.  When Yves Rocher has a sale, or I get coupons for free stuff, I stock up.  Currently it resides in a paper box, but will outgrow it soon.

I also buy X-mas and birthday gifts for family throughout the year and stockpile them.  Currently, I'm about 1/2 way done with X-mas shopping for the family.

the great glade 2 oz soy candle hunt!

2 weeks ago in most papers there was a coupon for a free 2 oz glade soy candle.

I can't find any!

Walgreens, CVS, Albertsons, and Target don't have them.  I am going to try and brave the wilds of walmart today- wish me luck- I hate that place!   If you've seen them, let me know!!  I've got 6 coupons.

In Other News- If you haven't signed up for pssst by general mills, do it now!! http://pssst.generalmills.com/

General Mills will send you coupons for free items and additional dollar off coupons (usually $1.35 off- weird amount!).  All they ask is that you try the product they are giving you for free and give the additional coupons away.  I usually send them out with coupon trains.

Their latest Free item I was sent a coupon for was the fiber one yogurt.  Despite the fact that it is Hungry Girl Approved  ( and you all know I love that site!), I couldn't eat it.  It's got aspertame in it (which I'm allergic to- Hello Migraine!), and it's got gelatin in it.  So it's more like milk and fruit flavoured jello- not so much with the yogurt.  For those who have sensitive tummies- it also has inulin in it, hence the fiber.

OOHHH.. One last cheap deal for the day- If you have a BJ's in your area, check out this. It's the Party for 2 deal: two salads or soups, one specialty pizza to share and a dessert to share all for $20!

Have a great (cheap) day!

sorry for the silence

Sorry I haven't been posting every day.  I had a car accident Sunday the 16th, and I haven't been felling up to doing much.

I mailed in my $10 Kellogg's Fuel for School rebate yesterday.  The $20 Kraft rebate was mailed in last week, so in 6-8 weeks, I'll have $30!

I hit the market Friday night to stock up, since our cupboards were a bit bare after the grocery challenge ended.  I bought a months worth of groceries for $87.72, and $10 of that is will coming back to me from the Kellogg's rebate.  We saved $55.00 with coupons and the store card.

I've been looking at milk prices and if you shop around- Henry's or CVS has the best milk prices in san diego.  If you pulled the Real California Cheese coupons that have been in the paper over the pas few months, there is a .50 off any 1/2 or full gallon of milk.  If you take it to a store that doubles (Ralphs or Vons), you'll save $1.00 on a gallon- that makes it cheaper than both CVS and Henry's.

FYI- Henry's accepts coupons- both Internet printed and insert.

Hope everyone is taking advantage of the great Back to School sales!
